Are you a sentimental person? If so, then you know that there’s nothing like receiving a guitar for your birthday from the one you love. This beautiful 1952 Gibson L4-C was one of these. We found this typed note inside the accessory compartment of the case. On the back was typed 1952.

Artie,

A “Happy Birthday” to my love,
Hoping there’ll be many more of
And here is a guitar for you my dear,
To play the tunes you love to hear
As you strum each little string,
Here’s hoping it will bring
Memories of me…

With all my love,
Lillie

If you’re not sentimental, it’s still a great guitar. This L4-C is a classic archtop acoustic guitar with f-holes and the “C” in the model name stands for cutaway. This guitar model was made by Gibson from 1949 through 1971. This one is in a beautiful sunburst finish which is in really nice condition. These older lacquer finishes polish up to such an incredibly deep shine.

This guitar has a spruce top with maple sides and back. The neck is mahogany with a rosewood fingerboard. The fingerboard has dual-parallelogram inlays. The frets are original and have very little wear. The original Kluson tuners and the truss rod work as intended. The neck is straight and does not need a reset. The action is low.

All parts on this guitar are original and no modifications have been done. The pick guard, bridge, and tailpiece are in excellent condition. The binding is in fine shape. There are some minor nicks and scratches, some finish checking, and a small finish crack under the cutaway. That said, this 58 year old, belies its true age and looks and plays like a dream. The guitar has a wonderful woodsy tone and is surprisingly loud for an archtop as well.
The chip board Gibson case’s hinges have broken over time. The guitar will need a new case for safety’s sake. As always, it will be professionally packed with care.
